THE FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICE
PRESS RELEASE
The Romanian President, Mr. Ion Iliescu, had a meeting with the High Command of the Foreign Intelligence Service at its Headquarters, on December 3, 2002.
Convened shortly after the Prague Summit, when Romania was inducted to join the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization, the meeting of the Head of State with the SIE High Command and the talks that ensued, have occasioned a deep-going analysis of the manner in which the Service has been carrying out the tasks devolving upon it, in order to ensure national security in the foreign intelligence field.
A particular heed has been given to tackling some key issues on the SIE strategy for 2001-2004, namely regarding the Service reform with a view to a better organizational and functional structure, as well as the concerns over making the Service fully compatible with the counterpart structures in the allied countries.
Referring to that point, the Director of SIE, Mr. Gheorghe Fulga, has highlighted the progress made by the Service in its adjustment to the NATO standards and the positive results of its cooperation with the partner services in matters of utmost topicality, such as the joint operations in the field of predicting and preventing asymmetric threats, especially terrorism.
The Director of SIE has elaborated on the advanced stage of the reforms which is underway within the Service and the existing efforts for giving the finishing touches to it – what testifies to the fact that the Foreign Intelligence Service works as a modern organization fully devoted to the democratic values and the homeland’s fundamental interests.
The Head of State has spoken highly of the activity performed by the Service and underlined, among other things, its contribution to assisting the country’s overall efforts towards reaching the goal of accession to the Euro-Atlantic structures.
Moreover, he has pointed out the outstanding tasks devolving upon the SIE for the time to come, the need for the Service to adjust its structures, objectives and modus operandi to the new requirements and exigencies incumbent upon Romania in view of her new status within NATO. A belief has been expressed that the whole staff of the SIE will be working in full accountability in order to accomplish those tasks.
