PRESS RELEASE
On June 7th, 2004, Mr. Gheorghe Fulga, PhD, the Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service, attended a meeting on counterterrorist issues, organized in Vienna by Ernst Strasser, Austria’s Federal Minister of the Interior, with the representatives of multilateral cooperation structures at the European level, in the presence of the European Union’s Coordinator for Counterterrorist Policies, Mr. Gijs de Vries.
The SIE Director participated in the debate in his capacity as member of the “South-East Europe Intelligence Conference” Troika and the forerunner of the alignment of this regional cooperation structure to the European process of creating the adequate framework in order to boost the collaboration on the fight against terrorism.
Mr. Gijs de Vries has underlined the European Union’s priorities in the counterterrorist fight, an issue that has led to a fruitful views exchange on the concrete ways for using more efficiently the existing tools and making steadfast cooperation forms operational between the intelligence and security institutions in the European countries.
Mr. Gheorghe Fulga has outlined Romania’s contribution to strengthening stability and security in the region, while highlighting the specific demarches by the Romanian intelligence services in order to fight international terrorism and, in general, the cross-border threats existing in South-Eastern Europe. In this context, he has also underscored the SIE initiatives on deepening the cooperation with the EU institutions specialised in thwarting asymmetric threats to our continent.
