THE FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICE
PRESS RELEASE
Between 13 – 15 October 2004, the Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Mr. Gheorghe Fulga, Ph.D., paid an official visit to The Netherlands, in order to hold consultations with the leaderships of the EUROPOL and the General Intelligence and Security Service of The Netherlands (AIVD).
The talks held at the EUROPOL focused on pinpointing some effective ways of cooperation in countering organized crime and international terrorism, in keeping with the statutory duties of the two institutions.
The SIE offer to provide expertise in the top priority areas and fields for ensuring regional security was welcomed as a substantial contribution to the multilateral cooperation mechanism that is now being built up for combating asymmetric threats.
To that end, talks were held on possibly extending the existing Agreement between Romania and the EUROPOL, by including the SIE as a cooperation partner.
The consultations with the AIVD leadership also occasioned a deep-going analysis of the bilateral cooperation parameters, focusing on the common priorities. The convergent assessments of the current international security environment afforded a clear-cut shaping of the fields in which the SIE and the AIVD could provide assistance to each other.
Moreover, taking into consideration the participation by the two organizations in institutionalized bodies of specific multilateral cooperation, the dynamics and prospects of the latter’s activity were analyzed, in terms of their contribution to ensuring regional security.
