PRESS RELEASE

On May 11 2005, Dr. Gheorghe Fulga, Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service, met the Heads of the EU joint Situation Centre and the Council Security Office within the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union , in Brussels.

The SIE Director presented the headway made in the SIE reform process in terms of articulating the activity of the Service to the situation centre and security structures of the Council of the European Union, following Romania's getting the status of „active observer” , and highlighted the cooperation between the SIE and the relevant structures of the Council of the European Union.

Dr. Fulga also underscored his full commitment to improve - where necessary – methodology for protecting EU classified information and to adjust the activities and legislation to the European standards, stressing the recommendations made by the European structures, as well as the establishment of a secure environment for the intelligence flow.

The SIE Director also reiterated the SIE's determination to contribute to a permanent and substantive intelligence sharing with the community structures in charge with countering international terrorism and organized crime. This type of cooperation can indeed make a contribution to strengthening the regional solidarity and have beneficial effects in the run-up to the full integration in the European Union.
