THE FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICE

PRESS RELEASE

On May 17, 2006, a meeting took place between the Board of the National Council for the Search of the Securitate Archives and the leadership of the Foreign Intelligence Service at the headquarters of the latter.

At the meeting, held in an atmosphere of mutual solicitude, the two sides reiterated the firm willingness to comply with the laws in force in order to continue and improve the cooperation between the two institutions.

An agenda of activities was agreed upon, in what concerns both cross-agency relations and the joint commission, as follows:

            a) on May 30, 2006 the Foreign Intelligence Service will commence the process of handing over a first share of about 3,000 files, alongside the corresponding intelligence registers, to the National Council for the Search of the Securitate Archives;

            b) starting with the same date, the human resources files of the Securitate officers identified as conducting political police will be handed over, in compliance with the law.

It was agreed that the joint commission should meet whenever necessary at the request of either side, with the discussions starting by reassessing the files that have been analysed in the previous period.
