THE FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICE

PRESS RELEASE

Mr. Gheorghe FULGA, the Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service, paid a visit to Brussels, from 19 to 21 April 2004, where he had talks with the heads of the security structures of NATO and the European Union.

The meeting at the Headquarters of the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization, the first at this level after Romania’s accession to NATO, has provided the opportunity for a fruitful exchange of views on the security issues currently facing the North-Atlantic Alliance, and the reform process that the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) is undergoing with a view to fully adjusting itself to the security systems of the Alliance.

During the talks held at the Security Office within the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, which have marked a first contact between the two institutions, the SIE capabilities in the field of fighting terrorism were presented, the potential risks to Romania and the European Union were assessed and the initiation of cooperation on the respective issues was proposed.

On the occasion of the visit, Mr. Gheorghe Fulga presented the interlocutors with the new organizational chart of the SIE, which provides enhanced efficiency and optimum conditions for cooperation with the similar services in the European and Euro-Atlantic realm, as well as the stages of the reforms envisaged for the next time frame, approved by the Country’s Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) in its April 15, 2004 meeting.
